THE READING TERMINAL MARKET

Schuylkill River Path

The Schuylkill River was originally called Tool-pay Hanna (Turtle River) or Tool-pay Hok Ing (Turtle Place) by the The Unami Lenape Tribe, the area's original inhabitants. The river was later named Schuylkill by the Dutch.  Kill means "creek" and schuylen means "to hide, or "to take refuge.” Some say the name translates to ”hidden river,” referring to the river's confluence with the Delaware River at League Island, which was mostly hidden by dense vegetation.

The Lenape Unami were also called  "Delaware Indians" by the English. English colonists named the Delaware River for the first governor of Virginia, Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr.
The bulk of the Unami Lenape actually lived along the Schuylkill River and not, as their namesake denotes, the Delaware River, which the Lenape called Len-api Hanna or "People-Like-Me River."
